The Spring 2012 AVITA, Harmony Garden Mural project has come to a close. However, the impact of the partnership between Artstream and AVITA will remain for quite a while! Two publications "caught wind" of the seeds sown through this project! The Dahlonega Nugget published an article highlighting the benefits of this project for both AVITA and the Artstream volunteers in their April 18 issue (see Past & Current Projects, Spring 2012 AVITA to view the article.) The NGCSU publication, North Georgia News has a feature article as well. To read the article, visit: http://www.northgeorgia.edu/NorthGeorgiaNews/articles.aspx?id=4294979772#.T56HTZKlDvw.mailto
Our final week was fun but poignant. The participants all received awards for their hard work on the mural. Then we played games with the participants while the mural boards were being prepared to hang in the hallway. We also had the privilege of having Dr. Chris Dockery, the founder of Artstream, along with Sharon from the Dahlonega Nugget join us to do a story on our Harmony Garden project. (Keep your eyes open for the story.) Once the mural boards were put up in the hallway, we took pictures with both the campers and participants and said our goodbyes as the session came to an end. It seemed that we may have had a small impact on the participants, but I think it safe to say that they had a much greater impact on all of us! There is nothing like working with the pure of heart to refresh one's soul!
This week the participants finished putting together the cut-outs to make the final flowers to go on the mural -- and the garden looks lovely! Last week the participants put warm colored flowers on a cool, blue background, and this week we finished up with cool color flowers on a warm, yellow-orange background. Now the Campers just need to put on the finishing touches in order for the mural to be exhibited. Next week we will have the grand Unveiling Celebration!
