For the last weeks of our time at the high school we made God's eyes from basket weaving. We took two crossed Popsicle sticks and tied yarn around them to create a pattern. This project did not do as successfully because of the activities that were happening at the school. None of the less, we still had several intrigued s

For three weeks we did a book binding activity with the students. Students took large pieces of white paper and folded it several times, opened the paper back up and cut slits into the sides. They then folded the paper again and attached cardboard covers to them. We had one student come to our table every week and make one. This project was not as popular as the last but students
The seed packet project so far was really successful. We had a lot of students producing them and it was great to see them interested in an activity that will be benefiting their local farmers. The seed packets that were made are going to be given to farmers around the county so that the seeds can be distributed.
Today we had a British Literature class come by to make prints and learn about heirloom seeds. It was a small group but they ended up making a bunch of seed packets. We also had several other students come to our table. The turn out of students today was a lot better than the last week. The students are really starting to become interested in what we are doing.
This Thursday was our first day at the high school. We had several of the students come to our table display with interest. Our first project is printmaking on seed packets for the heirloom seed community. The students printed on the seed packet templets and if they wanted to, they could print another print on a white sheet of paper. They enjoyed the printing process and found it interesting that their prints would be going toward the community.
The Spring 2012 AVITA, Harmony Garden Mural project has come to a close. However, the impact of the partnership between Artstream and AVITA will remain for quite a while! Two publications "caught wind" of the seeds sown through this project! The Dahlonega Nugget published an article highlighting the benefits of this project for both AVITA and the Artstream volunteers in their April 18 issue (see Past & Current Projects, Spring 2012 AVITA to view the article.) The NGCSU publication, North Georgia News has a feature article as well. To read the article, visit: http://www.northgeorgia.edu/NorthGeorgiaNews/articles.aspx?id=4294979772#.T56HTZKlDvw.mailto
Our final week was fun but poignant. The participants all received awards for their hard work on the mural. Then we played games with the participants while the mural boards were being prepared to hang in the hallway. We also had the privilege of having Dr. Chris Dockery, the founder of Artstream, along with Sharon from the Dahlonega Nugget join us to do a story on our Harmony Garden project. (Keep your eyes open for the story.) Once the mural boards were put up in the hallway, we took pictures with both the campers and participants and said our goodbyes as the session came to an end. It seemed that we may have had a small impact on the participants, but I think it safe to say that they had a much greater impact on all of us! There is nothing like working with the pure of heart to refresh one's soul!
This week the participants finished putting together the cut-outs to make the final flowers to go on the mural -- and the garden looks lovely! Last week the participants put warm colored flowers on a cool, blue background, and this week we finished up with cool color flowers on a warm, yellow-orange background. Now the Campers just need to put on the finishing touches in order for the mural to be exhibited. Next week we will have the grand Unveiling Celebration!
This week was exciting as we watched the mural start to come together. We pasted down the sky and background. Then the campers and participants started piecing together the cut-outs from the previous weeks to make beautiful flowers for the garden.
