The 2nd day of our 3rd week of Artstream! Today Kelly introduced the topic of alien language. Kids were encouraged to think about what aliens could say if they could talk; afterward, they made their own alien alphabet. Once they had their alien word or phrase, they began on their alien freak flags! They created flags using pre-cut cardboard and adding paint and/or fabric to begin with. They once again had a break in the middle of the day where they got to go outside with some of the Artstream Campers.
Once back from the break, we had stations set up again for the kids to add some decorative flair to their flags. Mary led a stenciling demonstration for the group, showing them yet another technique to make their artwork unique and fun. Some of the kids were really into their flag projects, while others quickly finished up their flag in order to go back to working on their wearable sculpture from the day before. Eventually everyone came to a stopping point and it was time for the Alien Fashion Show to begin!! The kids loved getting to model their wearable sculptures and show off their flags too. Even some of the Artstream Campers showed off their own work as well!
With the rest of our time together, we all engaged the kids in an activity called exquisite corpse. For this activity, one person begins drawing on a sheet of paper then passes their unfinished drawing to the next person to add to it. This continues up to the last person and then you will have a drawing of a wild and wacky picture!! This process was common during the Surrealist art period. The kids loved this activity as it gave them all the freedom they wanted in creating something crazy and fun!!
